Privacy Policy

This page explains what information PlanetPath may collect, why, and the choices you have. We’ve written it in plain English and kept it as short as we can while still being complete.

Last Updated:

The short version

  • No account, no sign-up. You can use every page and the calculator without giving us any personal information.
  • Calculations stay in your browser. The planet, speed and date you enter are processed on your device, not sent to us.
  • You choose what to share. We only receive your name and email if you send us a message.
  • We don’t sell personal information. We use it only to run the site and reply to you.

Introduction

PlanetPath (“PlanetPath”, “we”, “us” or “our”) operates the website at planetpath.xyz, including the Planet Path Calculator, a planet distance and travel time calculator. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you visit the site, use the calculator, or contact us.

By using PlanetPath, you acknowledge the practices described here. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.

Information we may collect

PlanetPath is designed to collect as little information as possible. Depending on how you use the site, the information involved falls into two groups:

TypeExamplesWhen
Information you provideName, email address, subject and messageOnly if you send us a message through the contact form
Information collected automaticallyIP address, browser type, device type, pages requested, date and time of visitWhen your browser loads pages from our site and the services it relies on

The calculator doesn’t need personal information

The Planet Path Calculator performs its calculations locally in your web browser. The planet, distance option, date and speed you choose are processed on your own device and are not sent to us to produce a result. You never need to give your name, email or any other personal information to use it.

To make results easy to share, the calculator adds your current settings to the page address (for example ?planet=mars&speed=50000). This contains only calculator settings, not personal information. If you reload, bookmark or share that address, it is requested like any other web address (see section 4).

Information users provide

The only place on PlanetPath where you can enter personal information is our contact form. If you use it, we receive:

  • Your name and email address, so we can reply
  • The topic, subject and message you write
  • Any other details you choose to include in your message

Please don’t include sensitive information, such as passwords, financial details or health information, in your message. We don’t need it to help you.

Messages sent through the form are delivered to us by a third-party form-handling service, which processes them on our behalf and only for that purpose.

Automatically collected information

Like almost every website, PlanetPath is delivered to your browser by servers. When your browser requests a page, those servers typically receive and may log standard technical information, including:

  • Your IP address
  • Your browser type and version, and operating system
  • The page or file requested, including any settings in the page address
  • The referring page, if your browser provides it
  • The date and time of the request

This information is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and diagnose problems. Our hosting provider may collect these server logs as part of providing its service.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files that a website can store in your browser. Similar technologies include local storage and tracking pixels.

The Planet Path Calculator does not use cookies or browser storage to work. Your settings live in the page itself and in the page address, and they disappear when you close the page unless you save the link.

PlanetPath does not currently use advertising or analytics cookies. If that changes, we will update this policy before doing so and, where required, ask for your consent.

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Blocking cookies will not stop the calculator from working.

Analytics

Analytics tools help website owners understand how a site is used, such as which pages are popular, so it can be improved.

PlanetPath does not currently use a third-party analytics service. We may review basic, non-identifying information from server logs, such as how often a page is requested, to understand how the site is used and to keep it running smoothly.

If we add an analytics service in the future, we will update this policy to name the provider and explain what it collects.

How information is used

We use information only for the purposes described in this policy:

  • To run the website, delivering pages and fixing technical problems
  • To reply to you when you send us a message
  • To improve PlanetPath, including correcting content you report
  • To keep the site secure, for example by detecting spam or abuse
  • To meet legal obligations where we are required to

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use the contents of your messages for advertising.

How information is protected

We take reasonable steps to protect the information we handle. Because the calculator works in your browser, the information you enter into it isn’t transmitted to us in the first place, which is one of the simplest ways to keep data safe.

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, and access to contact messages is limited to the people who need it to respond.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe something is wrong, please contact us.

Third-party services

PlanetPath relies on a small number of outside services to operate. When your browser connects to them, they may receive technical information such as your IP address. Each handles data under its own privacy policy.

We share personal information with these services only as needed for them to perform their function for us, or where required by law.

Data retention

We keep information only for as long as it is useful for the purposes in this policy:

  • Calculator inputs: not stored by us. They stay in your browser and disappear when you close the page, unless you save or share the page address.
  • Contact messages: kept only as long as needed to respond and resolve your request, then deleted.
  • Server logs: kept for a limited period according to our hosting provider’s standard practices.

Children’s privacy

PlanetPath is an educational resource, and students of all ages are welcome to use the calculator and read our content. Because the calculator runs in the browser and needs no personal information, it can be used without sharing any.

The contact form is not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age set by the law where they live. If you are younger than that, please ask a parent, guardian or teacher to contact us for you. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

User rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information under local law. These can include the right to:

  • Ask what personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct information that is inaccurate
  • Ask us to delete your personal information
  • Object to or ask us to limit certain uses of your information
  • Withdraw consent where we rely on it, such as for optional cookies
  • Complain to a data protection authority where you live

To make a request, contact us. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on it, for example by asking you to reply from the email address you used to contact us. We will respond within the time required by the law that applies to your request.

Because we collect very little information, and none at all for basic use of the calculator, we may simply have no personal information about you.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this policy when our website, services or legal obligations change. When we do, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will make it clear on this page. Please check back from time to time.
