Cookie Policy

This page explains what cookies are, whether PlanetPath uses them, and how you can control them in your browser. The short answer: PlanetPath’s calculator works without cookies and without any personal information.

Last Updated:

Cookies on PlanetPath at a glance

  • No cookies needed for the calculator. It runs in your browser and needs no personal information.
  • No analytics cookies. PlanetPath does not currently use analytics services.
  • No advertising cookies. PlanetPath does not currently show ads or use ad networks.
  • You stay in control. You can block or delete cookies in your browser at any time.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website can save in your browser. When you come back to the site, your browser sends the cookie back, which lets the site remember something, such as whether you are signed in or which language you prefer.

Websites can also use similar technologies that work in comparable ways:

  • Local storage and session storage let a website save small amounts of data in your browser
  • Pixels or web beacons are tiny images or scripts that can record when a page is viewed

Cookies set by the website you are visiting are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by another company’s service that the website uses are called third-party cookies. In this policy, “cookies” includes these similar technologies.

How PlanetPath may use cookies

PlanetPath is built to work with as little data as possible, and its own pages do not currently set cookies.

The calculator doesn’t depend on cookies

Basic calculator functionality does not inherently require personal information. The Planet Path Calculator performs its calculations in your browser. It does not use cookies or browser storage to work, and you never need to enter your name, email or any other personal details.

Your settings are kept in the page itself and in the page address (for example ?planet=mars&speed=50000) so you can share a result. That address contains calculator settings only, and nothing is saved in your browser once you close the page, unless you bookmark or share the link.

The table below summarizes each type of cookie and whether PlanetPath uses it today.

Essential cookies

Essential (or “strictly necessary”) cookies are needed for a website to be delivered securely and reliably. They are not used to track you for marketing, and websites generally don’t need to ask permission to use them.

PlanetPath’s own pages do not set essential cookies. However, the service that hosts and delivers our website may set a small number of them, for example to protect the site from malicious traffic or to balance load across its servers. If it does, these cookies are used only for those technical purposes.

If we add features in the future that need essential cookies, such as a cookie consent choice, we will describe them here.

Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies help website owners understand how visitors use a site, such as which pages are viewed most, so it can be improved.

PlanetPath does not currently use analytics cookies or analytics services.

If analytics services are enabled in the future, they may set cookies to count visits, record which pages are viewed and understand, in general terms, how visitors reach the site. Before that happens, we will update this policy to name the service and explain what it collects, and, where the law requires it, we will ask for your consent before any analytics cookies are set.

Preference cookies

Preference cookies remember choices you make, such as a language, theme or saved setting, so you don’t have to set them again on your next visit.

PlanetPath does not currently use preference cookies. The calculator doesn’t need them: your current planet, distance option, date and speed are kept in the page address, which you can bookmark or share if you want to return to the same result.

If preference features are added in the future, such as remembering your preferred speed unit, we will update this policy to explain them.

Third-party cookies

Third-party cookies are set by another company’s service that a website uses, rather than by the website itself.

PlanetPath does not currently use advertising networks or third-party tracking services.

Our pages load their typeface from Google Fonts. When your browser downloads the font, Google’s servers receive standard technical information, such as your IP address and browser type. Google states that its Fonts service does not set cookies for this purpose. You can read more in Google’s Privacy Policy.

If advertising services are enabled in the future, advertising partners may set cookies to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad and measure how ads perform, and some may use them to show ads based on your interests. Before that happens, we will update this policy to name the services involved, and, where the law requires it, we will ask for your consent first.

Any third-party service that sets cookies is responsible for how it uses them, under its own privacy and cookie policies.

Managing cookies

You are always in control of cookies on your device. You can:

  • See and delete cookies already saved in your browser
  • Block all cookies, or block only third-party cookies
  • Clear cookies automatically each time you close your browser
  • Use private or incognito browsing, which discards cookies when the window closes

If consent-based cookies are introduced on PlanetPath, we will also provide a way to accept, reject or change your choices on the site.

Blocking or deleting cookies will not stop the Planet Path Calculator from working.

Browser settings

Every major browser lets you manage cookies in its settings. The exact menu names can change between versions, but you will usually find them here:

  • Google ChromeSettings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, or Delete browsing data
  • Mozilla FirefoxSettings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Apple Safari (Mac)Settings → Privacy, and Manage Website Data
  • Apple Safari (iPhone and iPad)Settings app → Safari → Advanced or Clear History and Website Data
  • Microsoft EdgeSettings → Cookies and site permissions, or Privacy, search, and services
  • Android browsersBrowser menu → Settings → Site settings → Cookies

If you can’t find the setting, your browser’s help pages will have up-to-date instructions.

Changes to this Cookie Policy

We will update this policy if the way PlanetPath uses cookies changes, for example if analytics or advertising services are ever enabled. When we do, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page and describe the change here. For more on how we handle information generally, see our Privacy Policy.
